In the final tune-up before the start of non-league play, South County high school football teams took the field last Friday at the South County Jamboree, hosted by Soledad High School at the Gene Martin Stadium.

Weeks of training will be put to the test on Friday as football teams from King City, Greenfield, Gonzales and host Soledad High suit up for the South County Jamboree.

Overcoming obstacles and pursuing goals have just been something Rudy Guevara has always done. The 1973 Gonzales High graduate and wrestling standout returned to his alma mater on Saturday to offer words of encouragement to Spartan student-athletes at the Roger Fernando Gym just days before the start of the school year.

Seven South County runners were among the top placers at Saturday’s Salinas Valley Half Marathon and 5K.

Gonzales High School three-sport athlete Pablo Villasenor recently returned from Australia after competing in the 18th Annual International Games Track and Field Meet that was held at Griffith University Track in Queensland.

In an effort to improve the lighting for sporting events at Dick Force Stadium in Gonzales, light posts that have stood for 53 years are being replaced, and upgraded lighting will be installed.
