GONZALES — Gonzales City Council has approved the Measure K Transaction and Use Tax budget for 2018, which will use a large portion to pay off the debt remaining from the community pool.

The largest portion of the tax revenue collected by Measure K Transaction and Use Tax will go toward the pool debt at $130,000. Vice Chairwoman Lorraine Worthy also announced the seven organizations that were selected to receive grants from the Community Grant Program.

“We set aside $20,000 in budget 2017-18 for the Community Grant Program,” Worthy said. “In that program we’ve had seven people administer ‘X’ amount of dollars for these programs.”

The programs chosen were Gonzales Community Presbyterian Church, Grupo Su Unidos Dia Del Nino, Gonzales Lions Club, Ramirez-Treleven Hydration Station, Salvation Army Youth Program, Gonzales Youth Guardians Camping Trip and Assemblia De Gonzales Christmas event.

According to Worthy, the committee was so humbled and in awe of what the organizations were doing that they decided to allocate $10,000 to increase the amount going toward the Community Grant Program to $30,000 next year.

The other changes to the Measure K budget include: adding $25,000 to the Youth Service Development; A.C.E.S. Program will stay the same; the After School Day Camp Program is doubling funding to $60,000; the new Senior Program is at $25,000 and the Tree Replacement Program is at $30,000.

The Transaction and Use Tax will appear on the November ballot as an attempt to increase the tax by 1 percent.
