SOLEDAD — A 16-year-old girl from Soledad was killed and two drivers were seriously injured Thursday morning following a head-on crash on River Road south of Parker Road in Monterey County, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Monterey Area office.

According to media reports, the girl has been identified as former Soledad High School student Itzel Martinez-Morales.

The crash was reported at about 8:28 a.m. on May 28.

CHP said a 26-year-old King City man was driving a Toyota sedan northbound on River Road, south of Parker Road, while a 47-year-old Soledad man was driving a Mercedes-Benz coupe southbound on the same roadway.

Preliminary investigation indicates the Toyota crossed over solid double-yellow lines and entered the southbound lane for reasons still under investigation, causing the Mercedes-Benz to collide with the right side of the Toyota, CHP said.

The Toyota driver was transported to a local hospital with suspected major injuries. Martinez-Morales, who was a passenger in the Toyota, was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

The Mercedes-Benz driver was also transported to a local hospital with suspected major injuries.

CHP said alcohol or drugs do not appear to be factors in the crash.

Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact CHP’s Monterey Area office at 831-770-8000.
