SOUTH COUNTY — Summer is a week away and the South County YMCA is bringing activities for youth through its Summer Day Camp program, starting June 10.

Camp is open to students from transitional kindergarten through eighth grade, beginning at 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The camp is nine weeks long, ending Aug. 9.

“This year we’re involved more of the STEM and enrichment kind of activities,” Branch Director Lulu Vargas said. “If it’s more of a craft, it will be more of a science type of craft, where kids can ask questions.”

According to Vargas, the YMCA camp will involve cooking projects for the youth and using safe instruments for cutting items. The campers are asked to bring their own lunches and snacks. Water is provided. Parents can register their children for the camp the Friday before the camp week they would like to participate in.

“As an association, we all met to come up with themes,” Vargas said.

Some of the themes during the nine weeks are Mad Science, College Week, Holidays in July, Superhero, Hollywood and Back Yard Bash. The YMCA has a ratio of one counselor to 14 campers, with about three staff members for the camp.

“Space is limited, so come register,” Vargas said. “There’s also an opportunity for teens in high school to earn volunteer hours. We work with them to learn what it takes to be a camp counselor.”

The YMCA is also planning to have summer basketball and soccer programs. The basketball program is open to ages 3 to 17, with games held at the YMCA in Soledad. The basketball program is also available in King City, from June 17 to Aug. 9.

“This is our first summer to kick off Summer Soccer,” Vargas said. “It’s an opportunity for us. We’ve never tried it and we’ll be doing Summer Soccer here in Soledad.”

The soccer games will be on Saturdays. Summer Soccer is open to ages 3 to 12 and starts June 15 to Aug. 9.
