SALINAS VALLEY — Last week three of the four South Monterey County high school volleyball teams were in action.

King City Mustangs won at home against Everett Alvarez and North Salinas, both in straight sets, on Aug. 26 and 27, respectively.

On Tuesday, Aug. 31, the Lady Mustangs traveled to Alisal, who beat Marina in straight sets, after press deadlines. Then on Thursday, Sept. 2, King City will host Gonzales, who can easily be 2-0 this week.

Last week Gonzales lost to Everett Alvarez, 3-2, and Greenfield, 3-2. On Aug. 30, the Lady Spartans traveled to North Salinas, who just lost to King City, and will play against the Mustangs on Thursday.

Soledad Aztecs, the defending PCAL champion, are gearing up to defend their title and will play their first game this week.

The Lady Aztecs will start this season with two straight road games. On Aug. 31, Soledad traveled to North Salinas, and on Sept. 2, they will travel to North Monterey County.

Greenfield Bruins had a great week, going 2-0 with a win over Rancho San Juan in straight sets, 25-16, 25-20, 26-24, and another win against Gonzales in five sets.

In the game against Gonzales, some of the Lady Bruins’ top performers were Lupita Nuсez, with 21 kills; Linda Ornelas, with 17 assists; and Ariana Villagomez, with nine assists.

This week Ornelas praised the way her team has been playing, which she said has led to their success.

“I would have to say Lupita Nuсez and Emily Soto, because their serving execution is great,” Ornelas said about her teammates. “Both of them are prepared on defense and offense. But I feel that everyone has been contributing during the game.”

Greenfield will start league play at home against York on Thursday, Sept. 9.
