Letter to the Editor | Supervisor’s Support Critical in Advancing Broadband Infrastructure

To the Editor:

The California State Association of Counties (CSAC) — the voice of California’s 58 Counties — would like to thank Monterey County Supervisor Luis Alejo for his strong leadership in supporting Broadband for All in the California State Budget.

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed SB 156, authorizing a $6 billion infrastructure investment to supply high-speed broadband internet access to unconnected and under-connected homes and businesses statewide by building a statewide open access middle mile network and funding last-mile network construction.

This is incredible news for Monterey County residents as nearly half are stuck in a broadband monopoly and more than 42,000 local residents are caught in the digital divide without access to any broadband at modern speeds.

Supervisor Alejo’s support and advocacy were critical in advancing this largest-in-the-country public investment in broadband infrastructure, and the work is not yet done. Supervisor Alejo and CSAC will continue to advocate for additional legislation to ensure that the education, health and economic access needs of our residents are prioritized so all Californians benefit from 21st century digital infrastructure.

As a second term Monterey County supervisor, past president of the Latino Caucus of California Counties and former state assembly member, Alejo represents Monterey County on the CSAC Executive Committee and Board of Directors. His insight and expertise help shape Association policy during challenging times.

We are so appreciative of Supervisor Alejo’s dedication to digital equity for his community and the state.

Executive Director, California State Association of Counties
