Tennis | Lady Spartans play well on court despite losses

GONZALES — Gonzales High girls tennis team lost in back-to-back games last week to the Pacific Grove Breakers and the San Benito Haybalers.

In Pacific Grove, the Spartans lost 6-1 on April 22. The next day, April 23, the Haybalers beat Gonzales by a 6-1 score at Hollister.

Spartans head coach Rene Mendez praised his team for their inspired play against the Breakers.

“The single players played very well and were in each match,” Mendez said. “Our doubles teams had a harder time getting untracked. However, from our third match, up and down the lineup the girls are improving and more importantly having fun and representing GHS with the highest degree of sportsmanship and honor, which in any season, especially one as short and challenging as this one, is all a coach can ask for.”

In the Pacific Grove singles game, Hennessy Brown defeated Bella Yanez by 6-2, 4-6, 10-8.

“This was Hennessy’s second-ever match and her first varsity win,” Mendez said. “She hung in there and essentially out hustled and out lasted her opponent. “Overall, against a team that has not lost, the girls played well.”

Last Friday in Hollister, the Gonzales boys tennis team lost to the San Benito Haybalers by a 6-0 team score.

“We had a good effort by Ernia Esquivel and Gerardo Martinez,” said Gonzales boys coach Cesar Ayon. “Both improved quite a bit from their second set. We look forward to improving our play the next time we play them.”

Playing singles for the Spartans were Carlos Camacho, Ernie Esquivel, Julian Arreola and Gerardo Martinez. Double team members for Gonzales were Eddy Ramirez and Luis Hernandez, and Angel Renero and Aidan Cervantes.

The girls and boys tennis teams have a rematch with the Haybalers on Wednesday on the Spartan tennis courts.
