GONZALES — Gonzales High girls tennis team completed a successful week with wins over the Gilroy Mustangs and the Pajaro Valley Grizzlies. Gonzales will complete the regular season this week and then prepare for the Pacific Coast Athletic Championships.

“By winning our matches with Gilroy and Pajaro Valley our record improved to 7-2,” said Gonzales head tennis coach Rene Mendez. “We will finish with no worse than second place in league. This will be one of the best finishes ever and one of the best in decades.”

In the first match of the week with Gilroy, the Spartans shut out the Mustangs by a 7-0 score with four singles wins and three doubles wins. Athena Landeros defeated Emma Beck by a 6-2, 6-2 tally in the number one singles match, and Adilenne Ramirez won the number two singles match with a 6-2, 6-1 score over Gizema Mendez.

“Athena (Landeros), beat a difficult opponent,” said Mendez. “It was a great win for her. Similar to Athena, Adie (Ramirez), easily handled a very difficult opponent.”

Elizabeth Arreola beat her Gilroy opponent 6-4, 6-0, and Isabel Mendoza won her singles match, 6-0, 6-2. Doubles winners for Gonzales were: Valeria Reyes and Jesenia Arriola; Daniella Pacheco and Iris Valdez, and the team of Jacqueline Ramirez and Magali Santos.

Last Thursday on Senior Night the Spartan team beat the visiting Pajaro Valley Grizzlies by a 7-0 tally. Landeros won her singles match 6-1, 6-1; Ramirez bested her opponent 6-3, 6-1; Arreola won 6-0, 6-1; and Mendoza won her single match by forfeit.

Double matches were won by the team of Valeria Reyes and Jesenia Arriola and the team of Jacqueline Ramirez and Iris Valdez. Daniella Pacheco and Melanie Barrera won by forfeit.

“With this being our last home match of the season, we recognized 13 seniors,” said Coach Mendez. “This was our largest group ever and made for a very emotional afternoon. Our girls did well to regain their focus and play very well up and down in the lineup.”
