GONZALES — After losing 6-1 the previous week to the San Benito Haybalers, the Gonzales High girls tennis team improved by one match to fall 5-2 at home against the Hollister team last week.

Gonzales took victories in the girls No. 4 singles and in the No. 2 doubles matches.

“Better performance up and down the lineup from the first time we played San Benito High,” said Gonzales girls head coach Rene Mendez. “Double in particular played great and with a full season under our belts, the outcome could’ve been different. We are a young team, but overall there has been steady improvement every week.”

SINGLES RESULTS
Magaly Santos (GO) lost 0-6, 0-6; Carolina Perez-Reyes (GO) lost 2-6, 1-6; Emily Franscioni (GO) lost 3-6, 3-6; Hennessy Brown (GO) won 7-6, 7-3, 6-4.

DOUBLES RESULTS
Selena Renteria/Maria Hernandez (GO) lost 5-7, 3-6; Alejandra Pinon/Kimberly Pinon (GO) won 7-5, 6-4; Jennifer Young/Karely Avila (GO) lost 4-6, 2-6.

In the boys match against San Benito on April 28, Gonzales lost 7-0 to the Haybalers.

“We played Hollister at home and lost seven games to zero,” said Gonzales head boys coach Cesar Ayon. “Carlos Camacho at number one, Ernie Esquivel at number two and our number one doubles team of Eddy Ramirez and Alberto Hernandez played really well but came out short. On Thursday we beat York (Falcons), three games to one. They (Falcons) only brought four players for the match. Camacho at number one, Esquivel at number two and Eddy Ramirez played well and won their games.”

Gonzales is hosting two games this week, starting Thursday with a match against the York Falcons, and a match on Friday against Notre Dame and Palma.
