GONZALES — Gonzales High School boys’ tennis team will clinch an outright first-ever championship title or share the title with Oakwood by midweek.

This will be the first championship in tennis for a Gonzales boys’ tennis team. The girls won their first championship in the fall.

“We have two more division games left,” said the boys’ head coach Cesar Ayon. “We play against Oakwood at home (yesterday) on our Senior Night. If they beat us, we would share the title. We play against Hollister on Wednesday as the final game of our regular season.”

Gonzales is undefeated in the Santa Lucia Division to start the week at 8-0 and is ranked in the top 10 in Monterey County.

The Spartans beat most of their opponents by 6-1 or 7-0 scores in the division, except for Oakwood as the game finished 4-3 in favor of Gonzales.

Other teams in the Santa Lucia Division beside Gonzales and Oakwood are: Palma, Hollister, York, Alisal and Rancho San Juan.
