MONTEREY COUNTY — Monterey County Supervisor Luis Alejo has announced his 2022 Young Supervisors Program for local high school and first-year college students.

The four-week program will be held at the Monterey County Board of Supervisors Government Building. Alejo previously had a Young Assemblymembers Program during the six years he was in the Legislature, to mentor youth and help develop the next generation of young leaders in Salinas.

The program focuses on developing leadership skills and empowering the leaders of tomorrow by exposing them to important issues in our communities. Students will learn about the importance of civic participation, the press, community service, the legislative process and local issues facing Monterey County.

The program is set to begin July 5 and conclude July 27, with scheduled times from 2 to 5 p.m.

The Young Supervisors Program is open to high school and first-year college students who reside in Monterey County. At the end of the program, participants will be able to more effectively communicate with others, have a background in community service and organization while illustrating an understanding of the legislative process and the workings of a county supervisor.

Students that complete the program will receive a special certificate of recognition and a letter of recommendation from Alejo.

The program was originally founded in 2011, and was previously known as the Young Assemblymembers Program. It was created to provide the young people of Salinas and the surrounding areas with an opportunity to develop skills in leadership, team building, problem solving and learn about the importance of both civic participation and higher education.

During the course of Alejo’s previous Young Assemblymembers Program, more than 160 students successfully completed the program. Many of the alumni have taken the valuable skills they have learned in the program to prestigious universities like UC Berkeley, UCLA, West Point Academy, Stanford University, Santa Clara University and UC Davis School of Law.

The program is available at no cost to the participants or their families. Students may apply online or find the application form at this link, and turn it in at the Supervisors District Office, located at 168 W. Alisal St., Second Floor, Salinas, or by email at [email protected].
