Boxers fight travel to fights

There was no rest last weekend for San Ardo and King City Boxing Club head coach Rodolfo Tapia as he traveled to a boxing match at Santa Margarita on Friday and headed north on Saturday for another boxing match in San Leandro.

Lights replaced at Dick Force Stadium

In an effort to improve the lighting for football and soccer games at Gonzales High School’s Dick Force Stadium, 190 watt LED lights were installed last week just in time for the football season.

Valley of the runners

A nice cloud cover protected the lead runners on Saturday during the Salinas Valley Half Marathon that began at the Soledad Mission and finished 13.1 miles later at Pessagno Winery in Gonzales.

Scholarship runners

Three South County high school runners were awarded scholarships for their accomplishments as runners and their work in the classroom by the Monterey Bay Wednesday Night Laundry Runners (WNLR).

Villanueva helps team win championship

Lisa Villanueva had an outstanding tournament as a member of the Salinas Wildcats 10-and-under softball team that won the National Softball Association (NSA) Western World Series last week in Reno, Nev.

Half Marathon resumes Saturday

Hundreds of runners and walkers will take to South County backroads on Saturday to take part in the eighth annual Salinas Valley Half Marathon the will start at the Soledad Mission and finish at Pessagno Winery on 1645 River Road.

Natividad offers sports physicals at Gonzales

Natividad Medical Center from Salinas sent many doctors and interns to Gonzales High last Thursday and provided free sport physicals to the student athletes that will be participating in extra-curricular sports this year.

REACHING HIGH

South County high school athletic teams began observing ā€œdead weekā€ this past Sunday and athletes will have no contact with their coaches until July 30. Football, cross country and volleyball teams will resume regular practice after that date.

Verduzco to attend CSUMB

Gonzales High School and Hartnell College graduate Norma Verduzco will be attending Cal State Monterey Bay to continue her studies and pursue a spot on the Otter women’s soccer team.
