Gonzales soccer hosts dual banquet

The boys and girls from the Gonzales High School soccer programs held a combined sports banquet March 1 at the school’s cafeteria. Players were honored for their work on the soccer pitch and for their efforts in the classroom.

Ochoa finishes 1-2 at state championship

Gonzales junior wrestler Robert Ochoa finished with a 1-2 record while competing at the California Interscholastic Federation State Wrestling Championships at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield. Ochoa competed in the 197 pound weight class.

Schools begin baseball, softball seasons

The beginning of March means baseball and softball teams at local high schools are finishing up non-league games and getting ready to start the league seasons.

Senior wrestler Robert Ochoa of Gonzales High School finished with a 5-1 record and qualified for the California Interscholastic Federation State Wrestling Championships after placing third at Saturday’s Central Coast Section Championships that were held at Independence High School in San Jose.

Chieftains oust Spartans, 59-30, in playoffs

flurry of points by host Palma Chieftains in the first quarter had the Gonzales Spartan basketball team looking up at the 24-3 deficit. The Spartans played much better in the final three quarters but could not overcome the deficit in a 59-30 loss in the first round of the Central Coast Section Division IV playoffs.

Grey beats Blue in CTF game

A 40-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brett Baker to receiver Tony Amezcua in the third quarter held up as the Correctional Training Facility at Soledad Grey football team defeated the CTF Blue team 14-6 at Saturday’s Blue/Grey Game at Greenfield High School.

Spartans win 20th wrestling title

With eight wrestlers winning individual weight classes the Gonzales High School wrestling team won the school’s 20th Mission Trail Athletic League Championship on Thursday at Pacific Grove High School.

Gonzales boys head to playoffs

For the first time since the 2013-2014 basketball season the Gonzales High boys basketball team earned a spot in the Central Coast Section Playoffs. The Spartans finished second in the Coastal League and were 12-10 overall.

Gonzales wins 12th soccer league title

Winning back-to-back league championship titles helped the Gonzales High Spartans reach a dozen championships in the Mission Trail Athletic League.

Lady Mustangs beat rival Spartans, 53-48

Trailing 14-12 on the road to Gonzales inspired the King City Lady Mustangs to toughen up defensively and keep the Spartans scoreless in the second quarter. Gonzales fell behind at the half, but kept the game close though King City prevailed, 53-48.
