SOLEDAD — Soledad High School girls’ soccer team saw their season come to an end Saturday in a 4-1 loss to the Everett Alvarez Eagles in the CCS Division IV finals at Christopher High School.

“Everett Alvarez is fast and really good at passing the ball,” said Lady Aztecs head coach Victor Garcia. “I’m proud of our girls for getting the league championship and making it to CCS finals two years in a row when no one believed in us and thought it would be impossible since we lost a good player (Sophia Martel) after preseason. We proved everyone wrong. We are losing four starters after graduation but have a pretty good group of young players coming up next year.”

The Eagles held a 4-0 lead until the final minutes when Giselle Zepedad scored for the Lady Aztecs.

In the semifinals against Willow Glen on Feb. 21 in San Jose, Zepeda scored the winning goal for the Aztecs with just minutes remaining in the second overtime period off an assist by Myrin Amilpa. Goalie Mariana Leon made double-digit saves for Soledad.

“Willow Glen was a very good team,” Garcia said. “They had earned the #2 seed because they play well together. Giselle Zepeda scored the goal when we needed it most.”
