KING CITY — King City Fire Department has experienced an increase in fires that have been caused by unsafe battery charging practices and poorly built units involving both vehicles and equipment. The Fire Department is distributing public education materials to help promote safe charging practices and know what to look for when purchasing products that have rechargeable batteries. According to Fire Chief Russ Nichols, “The City supports battery powered equipment and rechargeable batteries because they are so important in reducing climate change and improving air quality, but chargers come with risks if safe practices aren’t used. Please always purchase and use the correct equipment, store and dispose of batteries correctly, and follow all safety instructions when using electric equipment.” View the materials at tinyurl.com/KCfiresafetytips. HELMET DISTRIBUTION
GREENFIELD — A free helmet giveaway, sponsored by the Greenfield Police Department in partnership with the Monterey County Health Department, will take place Thursday, May 16, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Patriot Park, 1351 Oak Ave., in Greenfield. There is a limit of one helmet per youth, who must be present. Youth are encouraged to bring their bike, scooter or skateboard. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
