GONZALES — City of Gonzales is temporarily suspending its traffic control efforts through March 24, with plans to resume on March 27. According to the City, earlier this month there were some “close calls” that threatened its personnel’s safety. “Although crew-facilitated traffic control is a short-term solution to a big problem, we cannot risk safety,” the City posted on Facebook. “Please give us some time to think about how to best proceed while prioritizing everyone’s safety.”


SALINAS — Hartnell College will host the Monterey County STEM Talent Expo, which connects businesses with students and community members looking for opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The event will be held from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 22, at the Hartnell College Stem Center (Building S) Lobby, on the Hartnell campus, 411 Central Ave., in Salinas. The Expo is a free, one-day event that will connect STEM industry leaders with talented students, former students and community members who are looking to further their education and career opportunities in a STEM field.


KING CITY — A group of family and friends have organized the Rita Tavernetti Liver Transplant Fundraiser for Thursday, March 23, at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds, 625 Division St., in King City. It will consist of a steak dinner with all the trimmings, a silent and live auction and a no-host bar. Funds will benefit Rita Tavernetti, who has been fighting Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC), an autoimmune disease causing destruction of the liver, for the past 25 years. SOLEDAD — As part of National Take Down Tobacco Day, a cleanup of cigarette butts and tobacco litter will take place Wednesday, March 22, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Vosti Park on Park Street in Soledad. Community hours will be provided to high school students for attending the cleanup, presented by Blue Zones Project, Sun Street Centers and STEPS Program. To participate, register at
