Candidate filing opens for November election
MONTEREY COUNTY — The official candidate filing period for the Nov. 3 General Election opened July 13, with nomination documents due by 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7.
Candidates for county offices may obtain and file nomination documents from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday during the filing period at the Monterey County Elections Department, 1441 Schilling Place-North Building in Salinas. Candidates seeking city offices must file with their respective city clerk.
The Elections Department also will offer “Books and Ballots: Candidate Filing” appointments from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Castroville Library on July 29, the Carmel Valley Library on July 30 and the King City Library on July 31.

CHISPA breaks ground on affordable housing in King City
KING CITY — CHISPA will host a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday, July 15, at 10 a.m. for Mills Ranch Apartments, a new affordable housing community at 260 Legacy Drive in King City.
The development will include 40 affordable two- and three-bedroom apartments for working families, including 30 units reserved for farmworker families.
Construction is underway and is expected to continue over the next 18 months.
Community leaders, project partners and stakeholders are invited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony.
Cal Fire plans night helicopter training at Lake San Antonio
BRADLEY — Cal Fire will conduct night helicopter training operations at Lake San Antonio in South Monterey County on Wednesday, July 15, from approximately 8 p.m. to midnight.
The training will involve the Cal Fire HAWK helicopter assigned to the Hollister Air Attack Base and a CH-47 Chinook helicopter assigned to the Paso Robles Air Attack Base. The exercise is intended to maintain and enhance pilot and crew proficiency in nighttime aviation operations.
Residents and visitors in the area may notice increased helicopter activity during the training period. CAL FIRE said the operation is a planned training exercise and is not in response to an emergency.
The agency regularly conducts training exercises to help ensure personnel are prepared to respond safely and effectively to emergencies throughout California.
SVBGSA seeks alternate board member
SALINAS VALLEY — Salinas Valley Basin Groundwater Sustainability Agency is accepting applications for an alternate Disadvantaged Communities Board seat through July 16.
The position represents disadvantaged communities, public water systems and mutual water companies on the agency’s 11-member Board of Directors. The selected alternate will serve the remainder of the current term, which ends June 30, 2028.
Applicants must either live in a disadvantaged community in an unincorporated area or represent a public water system, including a mutual water company serving residential customers only.
Eligible applications will be reviewed by a nominating group made up of representatives from the Castroville Community Services District, Environmental Justice Coalition for Water, San Jerardo Cooperative, San Ardo Water District and San Vicente Mutual Water Company. The group will recommend a candidate to the Castroville Community Services District Board of Directors, which will make the appointment.
