County implements security screening at Government Center
SALINAS — Monterey County has implemented permanent security screening measures as of Aug. 10 at the public entrance of the County Government Center, 168 W. Alisal St. in Salinas.
The new measures, approved by the Monterey County Board of Supervisors during the previous budget year, include walk-through metal detectors and secondary screening with handheld wands. The screening is intended to enhance safety for visitors and county staff.
County officials said the measures align with standard security practices used at civic buildings throughout California and the nation, and mirror security protocols already in place at the Monterey County Superior Court.
Public review begins for November election materials
MONTEREY COUNTY — Monterey County Elections has opened public review periods for candidate statements and local measures appearing on the Nov. 3 General Election ballot.
The 10-calendar-day review periods give voters an opportunity to review and challenge the language of proposed ballot measures and candidate statements before they are published in the Voter Information Guide.
The first review period, for candidate statements of qualifications and local measures, runs Aug. 8-17. A second period, for candidate statements filed during the extended filing period, runs Aug. 13-23. Primary arguments for or against local measures can be reviewed Aug. 14-24, followed by a review period for rebuttal arguments from Aug. 21-31.
During the review period, voters in the jurisdiction where the election is being held may seek a judicial writ of mandate or injunction to require election materials to be amended or removed.

‘In Love & Death’ art exhibit coming to King City
KING CITY — A new art exhibit at Sol Treasures will explore the contrast between beauty and decay through crochet, mixed media and handcrafted artwork by four featured artists.
“In Love & Death” will run from August through October at the gallery, located at 519 Broadway St. in King City. The exhibit features artists Katrina Diaz, Savanna Garcia, Jose Bathory and Zylee Diaz.
The collection is described as “an immersive gallery experience where whimsy meets the macabre.” According to organizers, the exhibit explores “the delicate dance between devotion and loss, beauty and decay, memory and imagination.”
The public will have an opportunity to meet the artists during a reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14, at Sol Treasures. More information is available at SolTreasures.com.
