John Hernandez Jr, 64, of Gonzales, passed away, surrounded by family, Thursday, October 18, 2018 at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital.

John was born July 24, 1954 in Salinas, raised in Soledad and was a longtime resident of Gonzales. He graduated from Gonzales High School, class of 1972, where he starred as a 3 sports star, football, wrestling, and track. He loved coaching girls softball, pop warner football, and soccer.

He enjoyed barbequing, cooking, card games, and spending time with family. John often volunteered for local city events and youth sports groups. He was an avid Raiders fan, along with Bay Area baseball. He was employed for Soil Serve for many years, retiring in 2013.

He is survived by his children; Louise (Troy) Clausen of Tres Pinos, John E. Hernandez of Salinas; granddaughter, Marley Morlet of Gonzales; siblings, Gabriela (Salvador) Alvarado of Selma, Chris (Carol) Hernandez of King City, Sandra Hernandez of Soledad, Cynthia Zubiate of Soledad, Ruben Mena of Soledad, Alicia (Carlos) Soto of King City, Petra (Juan Lara) Mena of Soledad; Step-Father, Henry Mena of Soledad; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Hernandez & Shirley Mena.

Visitation will be held Thursday, October 25, 2018 from 4 to 7 pm at St. Theodore Catholic Church, Gonzales, followed with rosary at 7 pm. Funeral Mass will be held Friday, October 26, 2018 at 10 am at St. Theodore Catholic Church, Gonzales, followed with burial at the Soledad Cemetery District.
