MONTEREY COUNTY — Monterey County authorities have arrested three people in connection with the murder of an inmate at the Monterey County Jail in Salinas.
The victim, 30-year-old Abraham Camacho of Hayward, was found unresponsive Sunday morning in a jail housing unit. Deputies conducting a routine safety check and delivering meals discovered Camacho at about 10 a.m. and immediately began life-saving measures. Paramedics and fire personnel arrived soon after, but Camacho was pronounced dead at the scene.
Monterey County Sheriff’s detectives arrested 21-year-old Romeo Tejeda-Gonzales of Greenfield, 19-year-old Marwuy Jose Centeno Camacho of Soledad and 20-year-old Elijah Herrera of Salinas. All three are booked on charges of murder, gang conspiracy and criminal street gang enhancements.
According to authorities, Tejeda-Gonzales was serving time for firearms offenses, Camacho had multiple warrants including one for murder with bail set at $14.23 million and Herrera was in custody for robbery and firearm charges.
Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office Coroner Unit will perform a post-mortem examination to determine the official cause and manner of death.
