SEASIDE — Monterey Bay Football Club announced Wednesday that the club has parted ways with Head Coach Jordan Stewart and Assistant Coach Troy McKerrell, while also naming Alex Covelo as the club’s new head coach.

Stewart departs Monterey Bay with an 11-30-15 record across all competitions through parts of three seasons at the helm.

“On behalf of Monterey Bay Football Club, we are grateful and want to thank Jordan for his professionalism, commitment, and the contributions he made to this organization,” said Monterey Bay FC Chairman and Chief Soccer Officer Oliver Wyss. “We wish him the very best in his future endeavors, both professionally and personally.”

Covelo, 47, becomes the club’s third full-time head coach and arrives with more than 15 years of coaching experience spanning Major League Soccer, the U.S. Olympic Team, Spain’s La Liga and international competition.

Before joining Monterey Bay FC, Covelo spent several years with the San Jose Earthquakes organization, including serving as the team’s first-team head coach in MLS. His résumé also includes assistant coaching duties with RCD Espanyol in Spain and a head coaching role with San Marino Calcio in Italy.

“It’s an exciting time to incorporate a proven leader in Alex who is highly respected both in the global and local soccer community,” Wyss said. “He will bring a clear style of play, structure, and a defined team identity to MBFC. Alex has vast experience internationally, with the U.S. Olympic Team and in Major League Soccer which makes him the ideal hire to raise our standards and build a competitive team for years to come. We expect him to have an immediate impact on our performance while continuing to develop our players and create long-term value within the roster.”

Covelo most recently served as an assistant coach for the United States men’s Olympic soccer team during the 2024 Summer Olympics men’s football tournament in Paris, where the Americans made their first Olympic appearance since 2008 and advanced to the knockout round for the first time in 24 years.

“I’m excited to begin this next chapter with Monterey Bay FC,” Covelo said. “Our priority is to build a team the community can take pride in — one that reflects strong values, a clear identity, and a commitment to winning. The support of our fans at Cardinale Stadium will be essential as we work to create a highly competitive environment and establish a true home-field advantage. Together, we will strengthen the culture of this club and drive Monterey Bay FC forward.”

A native of Barcelona, Covelo will take charge immediately and is set to make his debut Sunday when Monterey Bay FC hosts FC Tulsa at Cardinale Stadium in Week 8 of the USL Championship season.
