MONTEREY COUNTY — A 34-year-old Salinas man who was found unresponsive in his cell at the Monterey County Jail has died, authorities said.
Monterey County Sheriff’s Office identified the man as Alejandro Zepeda, 34, of Salinas.
Just after 5 a.m. on April 22, jail deputies distributing meals found Zepeda unresponsive in his housing cell at the jail, located at 1410 Natividad Road in Salinas, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies and on-site medical personnel immediately began life-saving measures. Fire and ambulance crews also responded and provided emergency assistance. Zepeda was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
In accordance with protocol, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office has requested the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office Coroner Unit conduct an independent post-mortem examination to determine the cause and manner of death.
