To the Editor:
SPCA Monterey County agrees that we need solutions to save stray animals (“We Need Solutions to Save Our Stray Animals,” Aug. 10).
Those answers are low-cost spay/neuter, adoptions, foster care, microchipping and compassionate shelters, rescue groups and animal control agencies working together. Together, we are saving lives.
Local cities have a responsibility to care for stray animals. Soledad and King City have chosen the SPCA to shelter their stray pets for many reasons, including our dedication to saving lives while welcoming all types of animals regardless of age, health or behavior.
This year, we saved nearly 9 of every 10 animals entering our shelter, including those with severe medical and behavioral needs. Our TLC Program, which mends broken bones and heals broken spirits, saves over 1,000 injured and suffering animals every year and our Ruff Start collaboration with Salinas Valley State Prison helps dogs who need extra training and love before adoption.
Saving 90% of animals meets the definition of no-kill, but we will never call ourselves that as we believe it is divisive and misleading. We will continue fighting to save the animals we can, and pour compassion and love into those that we cannot.
And, we will continue to offer the many free and low-cost services that make our community a humane place to call home, including spay/neuter, disaster response, school programs, cruelty investigations, wildlife rescue and more.
We invite everyone to learn more about us and how SCAR and the SPCA can continue working together to help the animals who depend on all of us.

President and CEO, SPCA Monterey County
