SOUTH COUNTY — Trailing 14-12 on the road to Gonzales inspired the King City Lady Mustangs to toughen up defensively and keep the Spartans scoreless in the second quarter. Gonzales fell behind at the half, but kept the game close though King City prevailed, 53-48.
“The Gonzales game was much different game than when we played them the last time,” said King City head coach Frank Padilla. “Our girls couldn’t find any flow. They struggled offensively and Gonzales was able to hit some 3’s that kept the game close. Our girls just kept working hard and were able to take the lead thought Gonzales had the lead to start the fourth quarter. We took the lead late, with maybe three minutes left in the game by coming up with steals that led to layups. The win kept us one game behind Soledad.”
Megan Flores scored 11 points and had 14 rebounds and added three assists and blocked one shot. Delaney Carroll finished with 16 points, six rebounds, and two blocked shots.
Alyssa Richardson had eight points, three rebounds, and two assists and Nancy Andrade scored six points, with six rebounds and seven assists. Mikayla Davis contributed with four points.
“The second quarter when they held us scoreless was rough,” said Gonzales head coach Felicia Villarruel. “Karla Roque led us in scoring with 16 points and Jazmin Flores scored six points with four assists, four steals, and eight rebounds.”
In their second game of the week the Spartans were routed at Carmel by a 37-12 score. Sofia Prieto led Gonzales in scoring with five points. Gonzales (2-10 in league and 4-14 overall), will host the league-leading Soledad Aztecs tonight and will host the Pacific Grove Breakers on Friday.
Last Thursday at King City Flores had a double-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds and added two assists in a 66-28 victory over the Santa Catalina Cougars. Carroll led the King City scores with 15 points and added two 3-point baskets, two rebounds, and three assists in the rout over the Cougars. Buddy Camacho scored 12 points, Davis had six points and seven assists, and Lucy Cabrera scored nine points.
King City improved to 10-2 in the Mission Trail Athletic League and 13-8 overall and conclude the regular season with road games at Greenfield (tonight), and at Pebble Beach on Friday with Robert Louis Stevenson. The Lady Mustangs must win their remaining game and hope Soledad will lose one or two games to have a chance at a share of the MTAL title.
