GREENFIELD — An 18-year-old man suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound last Thursday after police said he accidentally shot himself at a residence on Palm Avenue.
Greenfield police officers responded to the 1000 block of Palm Avenue after receiving a report of a possible domestic disturbance involving a firearm. Family members told officers the 18-year-old had been in possession of a firearm and had left the residence with it.
Officers, assisted by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office and Soledad Police Department, searched the surrounding area but initially were unable to locate him.
During the investigation, officers determined there had been no domestic dispute. Family members reported being awakened by the sound of a gunshot inside the residence and seeing the 18-year-old run from the home. Officers subsequently located evidence of a shooting inside the residence.
Shortly afterward, officers received a medical aid call regarding the 18-year-old in the 300 block of Parkside Court. Officers responded and safely contacted him.
Police said the man had suffered a single gunshot wound to his buttocks. The investigation determined the shooting was self-inflicted. The man was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
The investigation was forwarded to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office with a recommendation for criminal charges, according to Greenfield police.
“If you see something, say something, even when it involves a family member or someone you care about,” police said. “Reporting dangerous behavior involving a firearm could save their life or the life of someone else.”
