GONZALES — Class of 2017 graduates of Gonzales High School are attending California state universities, University of California, out-of-state private universities, community colleges and moving into trade schools.

“Out of 140 students, about 69 percent are going to attend California community colleges,” said College Pathways Coordinator Will Zibell. “About 69 percent of our students were enrolled, registered and were signed up for classes as they were walking across the stage.”

About 18 percent were enrolled at California state universities, while about 4 percent were headed to University of California schools. Three percent, or four students, were headed to the University Technical Institute.

The break down of the students is about 95 enrolled at Hartnell College.

“Hartnell is killing it these days,” Zibell said. “It is not a safety school. Hartnell’s programs are insane right now and they are doing very well.”

Four Gonzales High School graduates were selected to attend the CS-in-3 program for computer science. According to Zibell, the program is a three-year bachelor program in computer science. Once the students graduate, they can apply for jobs that pay $75,000 to $85,000 a year.

Scholarship funding for that program is still in process, so whether the Gonzales High School graduates will receive those funds is yet to be determined. Two additional students will be attending Monterey Peninsula College.

Six students were accepted to the University of California schools, including University of California Los Angeles, UC Davis and UC Berkeley.

In the category of private universities, one graduate was accepted into Harvard with a four-year, full-ride scholarship. One graduate was accepted into Santa Clara University, Chaminade University of Honolulu, and the University of Guadalajara.

Four graduates also were accepted in the University Technical Institute with an emphasis on diesel mechanics. One graduate will attend the Central Coast College.

The final category includes a few graduates who decided to join the work force.
