GONZALES — Gonzales High School baseball program hosted a dinner and awards night June 5 at the school cafeteria. Coaches and players gathered to applaud the players for a successful season and to enjoy a feast of Chipotle food.

“We had a good year but we want to improve our play next season,” said Gonzales varsity head coach Erik Lopez. “Going into the Pacific League we feel that with all our players that will return we have the chance to win a league championship. This season we had some games that we should have won and we want to improve our play to secure the close games.”

The junior varsity team was introduced by Lopez and every player was presented with certificates of achievement for completing the season.

Special team awards were presented to the following players: Ernesto Esquivel (Most Improved); Diego Valdez (Gold Glove); and Jordan Morales and Adrian Zavala finished in a tie for Most Valuable Player.

Lopez then introduced the varsity team members and gave them school certificates of achievements.

Special team awards were given to the following varsity players: Michael Duby (Gold Glove); Manny Vargas (Coaches Award); Gonzalo Villagomez (Mr. Hustle); George Cortina (Coaches Award); Giovanni Garcia (Mr. Baseball).

Mendez was awarded a Mission Trail Athletic League first-team medal and certificate. Villagomez and Garcia were MTAL second-team selections.
