GONZALES — Gonzales School Board has stood by its decision to let go of several teachers at the end of the school year, with a 4-1 vote last week.
Parents, students and teachers showed their disagreement with the Gonzales Unified School District board trustees by showing up and holding signs to the second meeting on March 12. Board Trustee Elizabeth Funk was said to have been present during closed session on Feb. 26; however, Funk submitted a letter of resignation to the board.
“It will be posted in the next agenda as to what our plans will be,” said Board President Rosalie Sanchez. “Liz has served on this board for many years and has done an excellent job representing the community.”
Gonzales High School alumnus Danielle Valdez has three nieces in the school district who were taught by Ms. Robinson, one of the teachers evaluated.
“All three are bright girls and have been given projects I was never doing in third grade,” said Valdez. “Some of their assignments are what I did at San Jose State. I was proud to know that they have teachers like Ms. Robinson.”
Valdez said due to the decisions the board members have made, some of them will not be sitting on the board next year.
Another parent spoke up saying that their daughter did not want to attend Gonzales High School. Parents were concerned about their children’s future, having the ability to get a good job or attend college.
Substitute teacher Edwin Roque also spoke at the meeting.
“Only one person is hearing us and that’s Mrs. Jaramillo,” said Roque. “Something doesn’t add up and only one person on the board is seeing that right now.”
Roque said to Jaramillo that this was not over and she had the right to bring this agenda item back as many times as it takes.
