Cross Country | South Monterey County runners finish season

SALINAS VALLEY — The fall cross country season came to a conclusion for local high school teams last Saturday at the Central Coast Section championships on the Crystal Springs course in Belmont.

All four South Monterey County high schools were represented at CCS, as King City and Gonzales had individual boy runners, Soledad fielded a boys team and an individual girl runner, and Greenfield had two girl runners compete.

King City’s Israel Limosnero was the highest finishing boy runner from South Monterey County, with a 26th-place finish in Division III, while Arturo Castro of Gonzales placed 42nd in Division IV with a time of 18:17. Castro has been a multiple qualifier to CCS during his four years as a Spartan runner.

The Soledad boys competed in Division III and placed 13th as a team.

St. Ignatius placed first as a team and Santa Cruz was second, with both teams qualifying to the California Interscholastic Federation State Meet on Thanksgiving weekend.

Running for the Aztec boys were: Jean-Luc Martel (55th place, 18:53); Jacob Dizon (66th place, 19:24); Marco Barrera (68th place, 19:27); Elijah Melchor (81st place, 19:55); James Pantoja (91st place, 21:08; and Joel Hernandez (94th place, 21:19).

Soledad’s Sofia Martel ran in the Division II girls division and placed 70th overall with a time of 22:21.

Representing Greenfield High in the Division III girls race were Maria Garcia (26th place, 21:45) and teammate Jimena Hernandez (45th place, 23:18).

Soledad runners Sofia Martel, sophomore, and her brother Jean-Luc Martel, senior, competed in the CCS Division II and Division III cross country championships on Saturday for the Aztec teams. (Michael Ramirez/Contributed)
