SOLEDAD — Organic farming company Braga Fresh is co-hosting a free, day-long seminar for area growers at the company’s farm in Soledad on Thursday, Feb. 16.

Co-hosted by Sustainable Conservation and the Monterey County Farm Bureau, the event will cover the practical knowledge of cover cropping on the Central Coast and how cover crops can assist growers with complying with Ag Order 4.0 by obtaining a cover crop nitrogen removed credit.

The field day, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., will feature presentations from:

  • Gina Colfer, Wilbur Ellis
  • Tom Hearne and Keston Giudici, L.A. Hearne Company
  • Richard Smith, UCANR
  • Sarah Lopez, Central Coast Water Quality Preservation, Inc.

Grower panel featuring:

  • Eric Morgan, Braga Fresh
  • Mark Mason, Huntington Farms
  • John McKeon, Taylor Farms

Introduction to reduced tillage in large acreage vegetable production at Braga Farms by:

  • Jenny Pensky, California Marine Sanctuary Foundations
  • Katie Chiapuzio, Braga Fresh

“We look forward to a day full of expert panelists, in-field demonstrations and sharing our experiences with cover crops and their ability to bolster soil health,” said Chiapuzio, director of environmental science and resources at Braga Fresh.

The event is rain or shine. Morning beverages and lunch will be provided. There are restrooms on site and attendees should be prepared to walk in muddy conditions.

Three CEU credits will be available for certified crop advisors.
