SALINAS VALLEY — As the spring approaches, it’s time to break out the bats and gloves as the start of the baseball season is officially on the way.
To start off the season, there could be a major problem due to potential rain coming into the area. Be prepared for a lot of games to be rescheduled.
Gonzales Spartans
The Gonzales Spartans baseball team enters this season as a favorite in the Cypress league. Last season the Spartans finished in second place behind the Greenfield Bruins, who moved leagues.
In the Spartans’ first game of the season last Friday, they faced off against North Monterey County. It wasn’t the start that the Spartans wanted, as they lost 10-0.
Gonzales had to quickly shake it off, as they headed to King City on Tuesday (after press deadlines). They will then host the Mustangs on Thursday at home.
King City Mustangs
It’s hard to say what we expect out of the King City Mustangs this year. Last season they finished below 500%. The Mustangs will be in the Mission Division again.
The good news to start the season, the Mustangs’ pitching staff was able to hold a good hitting team in the Greenfield Bruins to only three runs. The bad news is they were not able to get any runs across the plate, and lost 3-0.
The Mustangs then faced off against Templeton on Monday, where they lost 7-4.
Now, King City will compete against Gonzales in two games this week before heading to Atascadero on Saturday, March 2.
Greenfield Bruins
Last season the Greenfield Bruins won the Cypress league for the second time in the school’s history.
Coming into this season, the Bruins have moved up a league and are now in the Mission Division, where they are one of the favorites entering the season. With top stars like Manny Gutierrez and Malcolm Bautista coming back, the Bruins will be very competitive this year.
So far, the Bruins are off to a great start, with an overall record of 3-0. The Bruins have a win over King City and two wins against Coalinga.
On Tuesday, the Bruins faced off against Christopher, who just recently won a CCS title. They will then head to Templeton on Thursday.
Soledad Aztecs
The Soledad Aztecs, who lost a lot of talent from last year, do have a couple of young players that will be relied on to fill some shoes.
To start off the season, the Aztecs already had some fireworks as they walked off against Soquel 4-3. In their second game, their bats came alive with a 10-1 win over Weston Ranch of Stockton.
The Aztecs were back on the diamond to face off against Palma on Tuesday, and will then host Calaveras of San Andreas on Saturday.
