GONZALES — School’s out for winter break and the City of Gonzales is bringing Winter Break Day Camp to residents.

The Day Camp lasts three weeks beginning Dec. 17 and ending Jan. 4. The first week is open all five days, Monday through Friday. The second week, from Dec. 24 to 28, will only be available on Dec. 27 and 28. The third and final week, from Dec. 31 to Jan. 4, will be available Jan. 2, 3 and 4.

Kindergarten through eighth-grade students are eligible for the camp that already has 30 campers this week. Students arrive at 7:30 a.m. and camp runs until 5:30 p.m. at the Vosti Recreation Center.

Andrea Amador, recreational aide, has been involved with the City of Gonzales Recreation Day Camp since 2015, when she was part of the summer day camp. Activities are both indoor and outdoor, with campers working together.

“Usually we have about 30 kids,” Amador said. “We do arts and crafts. This year we are planning on doing Christmas cookies and have the kids decorate them.”

This year the camp is supervised by four recreation aides who oversee the campers while they are doing activities. The majority of the campers are returning this year, and the older campers help out with the camp as well.

Camper Oscar Villegas, 11, said he enjoys Winter Break Day Camp because he gets to meet new youth, have fun and explore outside. Fellow camper Nathan Arreola echoed similar thoughts, saying that camp is fun and he gets to meet new people.

“It’s fun and I’d rather come here,” said 9-year-old Jasmine Garcia, who is also attending camp this year.
