SALINAS VALLEY — The King City Mustangs, Gonzales Spartans and Soledad Aztecs began the volleyball season with wins last week against North Salinas, Seaside and Greenfield, respectively.
King City had a Blue and White scrimmage on Aug. 21 that pitted this year’s varsity team against alumni players.
“It was fun to welcome back our alumni,” said King City head coach Christine Domingos. “They gave us a good match.”
In the game at home with North Salinas last Thursday, King City defeated the Vikings, 25-21, 25-9, 25-10. Avery Munoz had eight kills and nine digs; Bri Zamora had nine kills, four aces and the two blocks; Alizah Carrillo contributed with four aces and 12 digs; and Taelyn Munoz and Mily Paramo combined for 25 assists and four aces.
On Thursday, King City will host Valley Christian Academy of Santa Maria in the Mustang gym. The JV game is at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity game at 6 p.m.
Gonzales hosted Seaside last Thursday and won the Battle of the Spartans, 25-23, 25-18, 25-22. Maricruz Bibriesca led Gonzales with 12 kills and added four blocks; Breyannalee Tello had 24 digs, five assists and four aces; Alitzel Mauro added 22 assists and four aces; Ava Mireles finished with five aces, eight kills and six assists; Juliet Villegas had 10 kills and five aces; and Carmen Sanchez had six kills, two aces and eight digs.
The Spartans hosted the Marina Mariners on Tuesday night in Gonzales.
Soledad downed the Greenfield Bruins at home last Thursday in three games. Kaylee Anderson led Soledad with three blocks and seven service aces, and Delylah Ocampo added five service aces.
The Aztecs hosted North Salinas on Tuesday and will play at Marina on Wednesday.
Greenfield will resume play on Sept. 8 at home against Coast Union of Cambria.
