SALINAS VALLEY — Gonzales High boys’ soccer team made the most of their only game of the week, shutting out South Monterey County rival Soledad by a 6-0 score on Friday at Rabobank in Salinas.

Four players scored goals for the Spartans, including two goals and an assist by Jorge Uribe and two goals by Edgar Santiago.

Ulisses Mancillas scored a goal and had an assist, and Jose Camacho scored a goal with an assist. Also assisting were Daniel Garcia, Jorge Lara and Luis Cabada, the Spartan goalie.

Defensive standouts for Gonzales against Soledad were Luis Benavides, Kevin Tavares and Mathew Arreola.

On Jan. 22, Soledad defeated the host North Monterey County Condors by a 3-1 score. Scoring the Aztec goals were Alfredo Garcia, Joshua Guzman and Luis Negrete.

Greenfield boys played two games and finished with two ties in the Gabilan Division. In a game played on Jan. 22, the Bruins played to a 1-1 tie with visiting Monterey. Joaquin Velasquez scored the Bruin goal and Gio Hernandez assisted on the goal.

Two nights later, Greenfield played the host Alisal Trojans to a 2-2 tie in Salinas.

King City defeated the visiting Salinas 2-0 on Jan. 21. Adolfo Velasquez and Andrew Quiahua scored the Mustang goals and Deon Rodriguez and Victor Medina were credited with assists.

On Jan. 23, the Mustangs and visiting Palma played to a 1-1 tie.

This week’s games include: Gonzales (9-3-3 overall, 5-1) hosted North Monterey County on Tuesday and plays at Monte Vista Christian on Thursday; Soledad (1-6-2, 1-2) competes against Carmel on Thursday night; Greenfield (7-2-4, 2-2-2) played Tuesday at Hollister and will host Everett Alvarez on Thursday; and King City (5-2-6, 3-0-3) hosted Watsonville on Monday and will host Rancho San Juan on Friday.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

The Greenfield girls remained in first place in the Cypress Division with a 1-1 tie on Jan. 22 against Gonzales and a 1-1 tie on Jan. 24 against Robert Louis Stevenson.

In the Gonzales game at Rabobank in Salinas, Gonzales was leading 1-0 in the closing moments when a foul was called in the large area. Alexeen Sanchez scored on a penalty to secure the tie for Greenfield. Bruin goalie Kimberly Zavala made 20 saves. Janelle Garcia scored the Gonzales goal off an assist by Italia Hernandez.

Against RLS, Sanchez scored the lone Greenfield goal.

Gonzales completed the week with a 5-1 win over host Santa Catalina in Monterey last Friday. Valeria Oliva and Alessandra Tejeda-Ochoa scored two goals apiece and Jennifer Fajaro scored one goal.

Assists were awarded to Fajardo, Tejeda-Ochoa and Zahaira Vega. Spartan goalie Italia Hernandez was credited with making six saves.

The Soledad girls’ soccer team is in second place in the Gabilan Division after a 3-1 win at Rancho San Juan on Jan. 21 and a 4-0 victory at home against Monterey.

In Salinas against Rancho San Juan, Soledad’s Mariana Leon made 10 saves at the net. Giselle Zepeda scored two goals and Myrin Amilpa scored a single goal. Vanessa Aguilar and Clarissa Valdez had assists.

At home against Monterey on Jan. 24, Leon had two saves, Aguilar scored two goals and Zepeda and Valdez scored single goals. Myrin Amilpa was credited with an assist.

King City had a tie and a win last week in the Cypress Division.

The Mustangs played to a 1-1 tie with Seaside with a goal by Destiny Mosqueda on Jan. 22. Last Friday, King City beat Palma, 3-2, with goals by Mosqueda, Janeesa Correa and Isabella Hernandez-Swift.

In games to be played this week: Greenfield (6-2-1 overall, 5-0-1) played at King City on Tuesday and plays at Palma on Thursday; Gonzales (4-6-2, 4-1-2) played Tuesday at Pacific Grove and hosts Seaside on Thursday evening; Soledad (12-1-1, 5-0-1) plays Wednesday at Hollister and will host Everett Alvarez on Friday; and King City (5-5-2, 2-2-2) played Greenfield on Tuesday night.
