GREENFIELD — More than 270 graduates from Greenfield High School finished their journeys as the Class of 2021 graduated last Friday.

While last year’s ceremony was canceled due to Covid-19 health guidelines, this year the graduates were able to gather in the school stadium before an audience of their families and friends.

Senior Class Adviser Alma Torres-Perez noted the past year had been different than anyone imagined it would be thanks to the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“It was a fun, exciting and sometimes stressful experience,” Torres-Perez said. “You all went through different experiences and you all made it here. This is just the beginning of a new chapter in your lives. My advice to you is, do not let society, people and current circumstances define where you want to go, what you want to do and who you want to be.”

Valedictorian Ana Valencia-Covarrubias asked for a round of applause for the many strong individuals who helped the students reach their graduation.

“We all pushed through the difficult times,” Valencia-Covarrubias said. “All I know is that although it may be hard, we must look at these obstacles as a way that built our character for the future.”

She added, “I truly wish the best for every single one of us in whatever path we choose. Despite all odds, we are finally graduating together.”

Brandon Chavarria, the class salutatorian, also spoke during the June 4 ceremony. “Life has thrown so much at us, especially this past year,” Chavarria said. “We all remember the last day of class March 13, 2020. We were all excited to hear we were getting two weeks off. However, little did we know the next year would push us to our limits. It is an understatement to say this graduating class is special. I’m confident when I say every single one of you sitting here is capable of overcoming any obstacles that lie in your path.”
