SALINAS VALLEY — South Monterey County high school wrestling teams stayed busy in San Jose this past weekend at various wrestling tournament for both boys and girls.
This upcoming weekend, King City, Soledad and Gonzales will compete at the Mid-Cals Tournament at Gilroy High School. Greenfield will not compete at Mid-Cals but will send their JV boys to the Lynbrook Tournament.
In Pacific Coast Athletic League dual meets this week, Soledad will wrestle Hollister on Wednesday night; Gonzales will battle Watsonville at St. Francis on Wednesday; and Greenfield wrestles against North Salinas on Thursday, after which King City will then take on North Salinas following the dual meet.
The King City Mustangs had a great showing at the Jim Root Classic last Saturday as they placed 15th out of 39 schools. The tournament was hosted by Prospect High School.
Standout performances included Ivan Paramo and Rocky Villanueva, who earned fourth-place medals. Angel Becerra earned a fifth-place medal and Aaron Macias was awarded a sixth-place medal.
The Soledad girls’ wrestling team participated in last Friday’s eighth annual Kusumoto Klassic Girls Wrestling Tournament. Soledad placed eighth out of 32 schools.
Natalie Ramirez placed second in the 235-pound weight class and Cayden Lopez placed third in the 135-pound weight class.
Coaching the girls are head coach Tiffany Muro and assistant coach Lily Valenzuela.
At the Jim Root Classic, Gonzales boy wrestlers Josiah Rosales-Garcia placed second in the 217-pound weight class and Gabriel Prieto earned a sixth-place medal in the 167-pound weight class.
Sophomore Christian Zazueta earned his first varsity match for Gonzales in the heavyweight division.
At the Overfelt Classic on Saturday, the Greenfield boys’ wrestling team had three wrestlers come home with medals.
Kevin Cruz placed fourth at 134 pounds, Jacob Velasco placed fifth at 140 pounds, and Jesse Chavez placed second at 152 pounds.
