GONZALES — The Gonzales High varsity volleyball team won their first game in the Pacific Coast Athletic Leagues Cypress Division, beating the visiting North Monterey County Condors, 25-17, 17-25, 25-14 and 25-10.

“The heartbeat of our team, our back row, stepped up putting the passes where we need them,” said Gonzales head coach Desiree Baltazar. “This allowed Madi Schweitzer to see the court and control in the front row.”

Baltazar added, “Some of our quiet players have come out of their shells and helped to ignite a fire in our defense. It’s been a tough road but they’ve grown a lot.”

Last Thursday the Spartans traveled to the Monterey Peninsula and lost to the Robert Louis Stevenson Pirates. Stevenson won the match 10-25, 25-23, 18-15 and 15-26. Gonzales is now 1-3 in league play and 1-8 overall.

The Spartans played at Gilroy yesterday and will host the Anzar Hawks tomorrow.
