SALINAS VALLEY — As the end of the regular season approaches, two of the four South Monterey County volleyball teams continue the quest for a league title.
Gonzales Spartans continue to have a firm control over the Pacific Coast Santa Lucia Division, going a perfect 10-0.
The Lady Spartans, who haven’t lost since March, are possibly one showdown away with Stevenson from clutching the title.
This week the Lady Spartans will travel on Tuesday to Pacific Collegiate, who they swept in straight sets the last time they played. Then on Friday, they will host St. Francis, who they previously beat three sets to one.
The last time the Greenfield Bruins lost was to Gonzales in September, but ever since then they have rattled off nine straight league victories. If the Lady Bruins win their next two matches and the second-place team in the Pacific Coast Arroyo Division, Marina, loses one of their next two matches, they will capture their first ever volleyball league title.
This week the Lady Bruins will host two games against Pacific Point Christian School and York, both of which they have swept in straight sets. Friday’s game against York starts at 3:30 p.m.
King City Mustangs had a chance this past week to put themselves back into the title picture in the Pacific Coast Mission Division, with them facing the top two teams in the division, Santa Catalina and Notre Dame. The Lady Mustangs, however, lost both games in straight sets, making them tied for third place with Monterey.
With the playoffs still a possibility for the Lady Mustangs, they will have two big games this week. King City will travel to Gilroy on Tuesday, and then they will host Monte Vista Christian on Thursday.
With just four games remaining, the Soledad Aztecs still haven’t won a league game. The reigning Pacific Coast Mission Division champs will not be defending their title this year. Soledad only has one game this week when they host Gilroy.
