GREENFIELD ā Greenfield Fire Department has recognized a local utility gas technician for their proper handling of a carbon monoxide situation that could have resulted badly had they not intervened.
Gustavo āGusā Rivera, who works for PG&E, was called to a Greenfield residence on Dec. 1 to check for carbon monoxide, a dangerous gas with no color, odor or taste. Soon after his arrival, Rivera discovered high levels of carbon monoxide in the home.
He immediately evacuated the home, opened all the windows and contacted his dispatch center to notify the Greenfield Fire Department.
āUpon the arrival of the FD, Gus briefed the responding Captain and directed first responders to the occupants for medical evaluation,ā said Greenfield Fire Chief Jim Langborg in a Jan. 16 letter to the Greenfield City Council.
As the homeās occupants were being examined, Rivera continued his investigation until he was able to pinpoint the source of the carbon monoxide ā a faulty appliance ā and then advised the occupants on what to do and who to notify to repair the problem.
āBecause of Gusās thoroughness, he identified and properly handled a situation that if left alone could have resulted in the loss of life,ā Langborg said.
Rivera lives in King City and regularly responds to fires and other emergencies requiring utility control at all hours of the day and night, according to Langborg.
āThe GFD wants the City Council to know who Gus is and recognize him for his commitment to the citizens of our city,ā Langborg added.
The City Council officially recognized Rivera at its Jan. 23 meeting, where he received a certificate of appreciation for his commitment to the community.
