As the end of the school year approaches, Gonzales High School hosted approximately 200 parents and future Spartans for the annual Ninth Grade Orientation on Jan. 30.

Snow Queen, King candidates being sought

Soledad Christmas Celebration Committee is looking for girls and boys ages 3 to 17 years old to be part of the 24th annual Snow Queen and King Competition.

Transportation meeting fills Gonzales City Chambers

Gonzales City Hall Chambers were full last Wednesday as the Transportation Agency of Monterey County (TAMC) hosted a town hall meeting with the California Transportation Commission to discuss future transportation projects on the Central Coast.

Off to Harvard, UCLA for Gonzales students

Cecilia Trujillo and Alondra Urena, Chualar residents, rose to the top of the Gonzales High School graduating class of 2017 and will be headed to two big name schools, Harvard and UCLA, respectively.

Soledad prison, correctional facility install wind turbines

Two local state agencies are making the switch over to wind energy, Salinas Valley State Prison and the Correctional Training Facility, which are working with Foundation Windpower to bring the green resource to the facilities just outside of Soledad.

THANKING VETERANS

The Salinas Annual Veterans Day Parade brought many local veterans as well as high school groups, such as Soledad High School NJROTC and Gonzales Marching Band, to honor veterans Nov. 11 at Downtown Main Street.

Gonzales schools welcome new staff

Gonzales Unified School District Superintendent Yvette Irving and Gonzales High School Assistant Principal Miguel Malagon each began their new roles, respectively, this school year.

The great outdoors

More than 100 youth between the ages of 10 and 13 recently attended Camp Redwood Glen, and 44 of those were from South Monterey County.

CTE program expanding to South County high schools

Students from King City, Greenfield and Soledad high schools are strengthening their career and technical education through South Coast Region Agricultural Education Consortium.

Artist Open Studio Tour comes to South County

The 27th Annual Monterey County Artist Open Studio Tour, sponsored by Arts Habitat, is coming to South County this weekend, Saturday, Sept. 30, and Sunday, Oct. 1.
