Zandra Jo Galvan

GREENFIELD — Zandra Jo Galvan, who has served as superintendent of the Greenfield Union School District (GUSD) since 2017, has been selected to become the next superintendent of the Salinas Union High School District.

Galvan has been in education for 31 years, beginning her career in 1993 in Greenfield, where she also grew up. Over the past eight years, she has led the GUSD with a focus on innovation and student success.

During her tenure, Galvan oversaw a series of achievements that earned the district national recognition.

Among her many initiatives was the launch of the “Portrait of a Greenfield Learner” framework, which debuted with great excitement for the 2024-25 school year. This initiative aims to empower learners of all ages, preparing them for success in an ever-changing global landscape.

Reflecting on her years with GUSD, Galvan expressed her deep connection to the community.

“I have loved every minute of serving Greenfield USD and giving back to a community that gave me so much love and joy,” she said.

Under her leadership, the district introduced a variety of educational innovations, including PreK-8 Essential Standards, Social Emotional Learning and Positive Behavior Interventions. Technology played a key role as well, with the district implementing Google Applications for Education (GAFE) and establishing partnerships with Apple and Google Education to enhance classroom learning.

The district also became a League of Innovative Schools member, gaining national attention for its commitment to 21st-century skills, with programs using such technology as an eSports lab, virtual reality headsets, drones and robotics. Recently, the district partnered with Digital Promise and Verizon for the Verizon Innovative Learning program, which aims to equip students with the latest technology while also supporting teachers.

Galvan also spearheaded efforts to make GUSD a wellness-focused district, with all schools becoming Blue Zones approved. College and career readiness was another priority, with each GUSD student visiting a different university every year.

“It has been my sincere honor to have been the Greenfield USD superintendent,” Galvan said. “Since I began in 2017, I have witnessed the beautiful positive school culture explode from every facet and the unity in the community that thrives in support of every young person and adult in our school district.”

Galvan’s long list of accomplishments is supported by a robust educational background, including degrees from Hartnell College, Fresno State, CSU Monterey Bay, San Jose State and a doctorate from the University of Southern California.

The GUSD Board of Trustees expressed its gratitude to Galvan for her leadership.

“We were fortunate to have had Dr. Galvan be here in Greenfield for the last eight years leading, advocating and supporting our beautiful community,” said Board President Denise Jaime.

Galvan, who was born in Salinas and is the youngest of six children, will begin her new role on Oct. 1. She is married to retired Monterey County Sheriff’s Office detective Javier Galvan and has three children: Zoe Jo and twins Zia Jo and Zachary.

“Thank you for allowing me to be your trusted leader and partner in this journey,” Galvan said. “I know that I leave Greenfield in a beautiful state with advancing academics, celebrating joy and wellness, and empowering each other to dream boldly and greatly for every one of our scholars.”
