KING CITY — The cross country season kicked off last week with the annual South County Cross Country Jamboree at San Lorenzo Park in King City.
Participating this year were Avenal, Coalinga, Gonzales, Greenfield, Soledad and host King City. The meet serves as the start of the competitive season for local schools.
The King City varsity girls were winners in the varsity division and were led by junior Rosa Pacheco, who placed first in 22:12 over the 5,000-meter course, followed by teammate Areli Delfino, who placed second in a time of 22:47.
Avenal almost swept the varsity boys division but King City had Ivan Diaz place fifth (17:21) and Fernando Merino place sixth (17:31). Ulises Aguilar of Greenfield placed seventh in the varsity division in 17:45.
At the Fifth Annual Fighting Knights Invitational at Crystal Springs, the Mustang boys placed first in the senior boys division and were led by Diaz. Rosa Pacheco led the King City girls with a ninth-place finish in the junior girls division.
