SOUTH COUNTY — The Gonzales High varsity softball team won its first game as a member of the Coastal League, defeating the King City Lady Mustangs 5-2 on Thursday in Gonzales. King City scored two games in the sixth inning but could not make up the three-run deficit.

“A bunt by Belle Arreola got us going as the game was a stalemate up to the third inning,” said Gonzales head coach Joey Basaldua. “Alexis De La Rosa moved over to second base on the bunt and both runners scored on a hit by Sofia Prieto. That play really woke our team up because we played a lot better after taking the lead.”

Gonzales held a 3-0 lead until the fourth inning when the Spartans scored two more runs to take a 5-0 advantage. Jasmin Flores led the Gonzales hitters with a 2 x 3 performance at the plate and Prieto was 2 x 4 with a basehit and a double. King City was led by Buddy Camacho’s two basehits.

The win gives the Spartans a 1-1 record in the Coastal League and 1-3 overall record. King City is 2-3 in the Coastal League and 3-7 overall.

Gonzales hosted the Salinas Cowboys in a non-league game on Monday, hosted the league-leading (3-1) Greenfield Lady Bruins yesterday, and travel to San Juan Bautista to play the 1-3 Anzar Hawks tomorrow afternoon. King City played yesterday against the 2-0 Trinity Christian Warriors and will host Greenfield tomorrow afternoon at 3:30.
