GONZALES — The Gonzales High wrestling program hosted back to back events last Friday and Saturday in the Roger Fernando Gym. On Friday the Spartans hosted the Gonzales Pre-Season Dual Tournament that featured teams from the Monterey Bay League and the Mission Trail Athletic League.
Teams representing the MBL were: Monterey, Salinas, and North Monterey County. Representing the MTAL were: Pacific Grove, Soledad, and Gonzales. In the first round of wrestling the Salinas Cowboys beat the Pacific Grove Breakers 66-12; the Monterey Toreadores beat the Soledad Aztecs 33-20; and Gonzales defeated the North Monterey County Condors, 58-12.
In the second round Pacific Grove downed NMC 39-24; Salinas pinned the Aztecs 64-6; and Gonzales beat the Toreadores, 65-6. In the final round of the dual meet tournament NMC beat Soledad 30-12; Monterey edged the Breakers 29-27; and Salinas handled Gonzales, 45-33.
On Saturday the Gonzales wrestling program hosted the Spartan Winter Crucible, a junior varsity and girls tournament.
Teams participating in the tournament were Lynbrook, Salinas, Monterey, Greenfield, Soledad, Palma, Everett Alvarez, Pacific Grove, and host Gonzales.
For Gonzales Gustavo Castro placed first at 132 with a 3-0 record, Chase Castillo placed second at 132 with a 2-1 record, and Pablo Contreras placed 3rd at 138 with a 2-2 record.
Veronica Rodriguez went 4-0 in the girls division with 4-0 record at 138 and Maria Lopez was 3rd at 138 and finished with a 2-2 record.
Sebastian Lopez of Soledad was third at 113, Juan Sandoval placed third at 195, and Fernando Hernandez placed fourth at 195.
In the girls division Juana Guerrero of Soledad placed first at 113 and teammate Keysi Robles was third at 113.
Veronica Garcia-Ramirez placed second at 106 and Samantha Bailon was fourth at 145.
Andrea Martinez placed second at 160 and Jaqueline Negrete-Morales was third at 132.
