GONZALES — A chance to nail down first place in the Coastal League disappeared for the host Gonzales Spartans after a 70-52 loss to the Marina Mariners last Wednesday night in Gonzales.

“We forgot our defensive responsibilities,” said Gonzales head coach Bo Bueller. “They (Mariners), got hot and made some good shots.”

Marina secured the league in the second half as turnovers and missed shots attributed to the Spartans loss.

Isaiah Banuelos and Xavier Cervantes led Gonzales with 16 points apiece and Pablo Villasenor added 16 points.

The Spartans finished the week with 70-49 win over Pacific Point Christian. Isaiah Banuelos led Gonzales with 27 points and was joined in double-figures by Pablo Villasenor with 14 points and Gonzalo Villagomez with 10 points.

Gonzales hosted Ceiba College Prep last night in the Roger Fernando Gym and will play the last Coastal League game tomorrow night against the York Falcons.
