SOLEDAD — As the nation prepares to celebrate Independence Day, the Soledad Police Department is emphasizing the importance of celebrating responsibly and making safe choices to prevent tragic accidents on the roads.

From Monday, June 30, through Sunday, July 6, the department will deploy additional officers on patrol, focusing on identifying and stopping drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs during the holiday period.

Statistics underscore the importance of this effort. In 2023, 617 fatalities occurred across the United States during the Fourth of July holiday, with alcohol involved in 38% of these deadly crashes. California alone saw 29 crash-related deaths during the holiday, with California Highway Patrol officers making over 1,300 arrests for impaired driving last year.

“Designating a sober driver is a simple choice that can save your life and the lives of others on the road,” said Soledad Police Sgt. Jesus Contreras. “Drunk driving is 100% preventable. We urge everyone to think about their loved ones, friends and family before getting behind the wheel. Make a plan to get home safely.”

Impacted driving isn’t solely caused by alcohol; prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, cannabis products and other substances can impair judgment and reaction times. Those who plan to consume any of these should designate a sober driver or use alternative transportation options, police advised.

The department recommends the following safety tips for a joyful and safe Fourth of July:

  • Designate a Sober Driver: Choose someone who will remain alcohol-free to ensure everyone gets home safely.
  • Use Ride-Sharing or Public Transit: If drinking, opt for rideshare services, taxis, or public transportation.
  • Host Responsibly: Offer plenty of non-alcoholic beverages and arrange safe transportation for guests.
  • Look Out for Others: Don’t hesitate to take the keys from impaired friends or family members and assist in finding a sober ride.
  • Stay Alert: Be vigilant for impaired drivers on the road and report suspicious activity by calling 831-755-5111 or 911.

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
