SALINAS VALLEY — High school softball is wrapping up for the four varsity teams from South Monterey County, who only have a few more games to play over the next week before the regular season ends.

King City Mustangs

Since their loss to Robert Louis Stevenson, King City Mustangs have gone 1-4-1.

What was supposed to be a year that the Lady Mustangs compete for the title, their window is closing as they get ready to play their final six games of the season.

The good news for the Mustangs is that they still control their way to the playoffs, and four of their six final games are at home.

This week is enormous as they travel to Robert Louis Stevenson on Monday, and then host the first-place Pacific Grove Breakers the very next day.

Soledad Aztecs

One of the surprising teams this year has to be the Soledad Aztecs varsity softball team, who is 10-0 and closing in on their first-ever league title.

In the history of the Soledad softball program, one could probably count on one hand the number of seasons that they had a winning record or a season that ended with .500.

This season the Lady Aztecs have destroyed their opponents as they have beaten everyone by six runs or more. But when they have played anyone outside of their division, they have gone 0-5.

Regardless of what happens, this will go down as the best season in the program’s history.

Greenfield Bruins

The Greenfield Bruins softball team could have probably benefited from moving down a division as they continue to struggle.

So far this season, the Lady Bruins are 1-6 in the Mission Division. But they have been competitive in two of their last three games.

In a game against St. Francis, they were able to get their first league win of the season, 4-1. However, in their most recent game, they came up short to Santa Catalina School, 3-0.

Gonzales Spartans

Just like their rivals, the Gonzales Spartans softball team has gone 3-4 since dropping their last game to Robert Louis Stevenson.

If the Lady Spartans are going to make a push to the playoffs, they have to have a good outing in these last five games of the season.

The good news for the Spartans is they have three games against teams at the bottom of the division. On top of that, they have another play with Pacific Grove Breakers.

Out of their final five games, the Lady Spartans will host three of them.
