SALINAS VALLEY — As the softball season hits the halfway mark, both King City and Gonzales find themselves atop the Cypress Division, as the teams prepared to play game two of their season series earlier this week.

In what has been an impressive year for the girls’ sport at Greenfield High, this year’s Bruins softball team has dominated in the Santa Lucia Division.

The Soledad Aztecs still have a pulse, but barely. If the Lady Aztecs want any chance of a postseason berth, they will need to go on a run.

King City Mustangs

Since dropping two in a row, the Lady Mustangs have won three straight games by double-digit runs. The scoring part is no surprise, but only giving up one run on three games is the stat that stands out.

During the three-game winning streak, King City player Malaya Carrillo has pitched 13 innings and only given up one run.

The Lady Mustangs are currently 5-0 in the Cypress Division, and if they are going to continue their win streak, they will have to beat their Gonzales rivals. The last time King City faced the Spartans, it took a four-run seventh inning to beat them.

King City traveled to Gonzales on April 11, where the Spartans came out on top, 2-1.

Gonzales Spartans

After going on a two-game losing streak, the Lady Spartans have won four of their last five games to put themselves back in the hunt for the Cypress Division title.

Gonzales pitcher Alex Guerrero was dominant against Pacific Grove, striking out eight batters and only allowing one run in their 4-1 win.

Now, the Lady Spartans (4-2) were looking to beat their longest rivals, the King City Mustangs. In their first matchup, the Spartans were leading by three runs going into the seventh inning, and if you ask them, they should have won that game. However, they got their revenge in the second matchup, beating the Mustangs 2-1.

Greenfield Bruins

With three no-hitters in a week, the Lady Bruins are showing how dominant they can be. The Greenfield girls are only a couple of wins away from bringing home their first softball league title.

This week, Greenfield players Linda Ornelas and Mikayla Sanchez combined for three no-hitters. The Bruins outscored three of their opponents, 58-0, as they moved 8-0 in the Santa Lucia Division.

Greenfield played again on April 12 in Seaside, where the Bruins won 15-5.

Soledad Aztecs

Softball has always struggled at Soledad High, and that tradition will seem to continue this season. But, the Lady Aztecs did beat Alisal, 10-5, on April 7, which keeps some hope of a run for a postseason spot.

The Lady Aztecs (2-3) will play at home against Pacific Grove on Wednesday, April 20.
