Soccer | South Monterey County teams prepare to start league play

SALINAS VALLEY — With most winter sports moving indoors, South Monterey County soccer teams are still playing out in the cold and rain. Here is a look at how both boy and girl varsity teams are doing so far this season.

King City Mustangs

The King City boys soccer team is off to a great start at 3-1-1. All three of the Mustangs’ wins have come against South Monterey County teams.

The Mustangs will finish their preseason schedule against Everett Alvarez before opening up league play against Gilroy on Jan. 10.

The leading scorer for the Mustangs is Victor Narez with six goals.

With two games canceled, the Lady Mustangs have only played two games so far, coming up short against North Monterey County and Carmel. The leading scorer for the Lady Mustangs is Samantha Paramo.

The King City girls will wrap up their preseason schedule against Alisal on Jan. 10 before hosting Soledad on Jan. 12.

Greenfield Bruins

The Greenfield boys soccer team is off to a good start at 2-2-2. With wins over Soledad and Stevenson, the Bruins will wrap up their preseason schedule with another match against Stevenson before hosting Carmel in the league opener.

The Bruins leading scorer is Victor Contreras with four goals.

It hasn’t been the best of starts for the Lady Bruins, starting off the season on a three-game losing streak. So far, they have been outscored, 26-2, in the three games they have played.

The Lady Bruins will start league play on Jan. 4, when Norte Dame comes to Greenfield.

Soledad Aztecs

The Soledad boys team owns a record of 1-2-1. Not a great start to the season, but Soledad has won and tied in their last two matches against Soquel and North Monterey County.

With two preseason games against Monterey and Monta Vista Christian, the Aztecs will have a chance to improve their record before starting league play against Salinas High on Jan. 11.

The Lady Aztecs have been on a roll, starting the season 4-2 and outscoring their opponents 46-9. Soledad has scored double-digit goals in three games this season.

The Lady Aztecs will open up league play against King City on Jan. 12.

Soledad’s leading scorer is Sophia Martel with 24 goals in six games.

Gonzales Spartans

The Gonzales boys soccer team has only played one game so far, losing to King City by a 4-2 score. The Spartans are set to open league play on Jan. 12 at North Monterey County.

The Lady Spartans have a record of 2-1. They own victories over Ceiba College Prep, 3-1, and North Monterey County, 3-2. League play will start Jan. 4 at Rancho San Juan.

Leading scorer for the Lady Spartans is Ruby Virgen with two goals.
