SALINAS VALLEY — The last two divisional boys’ soccer games were played Tuesday, after press deadlines, as Gonzales competed against host Soledad and Greenfield took on Alisal in Salinas.

The Gonzales-at-Soledad game was rescheduled from last Friday because of wet conditions at the Aztec stadium. The Spartans had a 14-3-2 overall mark and 10-1 Cypress record before the Soledad game.

The Greenfield-at-Alisal game was the last scheduled regular season game for South Monterey County teams.

The Central Coast Section will have the soccer-seeding meeting on Thursday.

Last Tuesday, Greenfield traveled to the Monterey Peninsula and defeated the host Monterey Toreadores by a 2-1 score. Braulio Zuniga and Anthony Zavala scored the Bruin goals, and Alex Sanchez and Joaquin Velasquez earned assists.

Greenfield was 4-4-3 in the Gabilan Division and 9-4-5 overall before the Alisal game.

Soledad played one game last week, losing to the host North Monterey County Condors by a 3-2 score in Castroville. The Aztecs were in third place in the Cypress Division with a 5-3-3 league record and 6-7-4 overall before the Gonzales game.

King City played two Mission Division contests last week, losing by a 1-0 score to host Salinas High and beating host Palma 2-1. The Mustangs were 6-2-4 in the league and 8-4-7 overall.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

The Soledad girls’ soccer team finished the regular season and the Gabilan Division schedule with a 17-2-1 overall mark. The Aztecs were 10-1-1 in the league with one loss and tie to the Salinas Cowboys.

Last Wednesday in Salinas, the Aztecs erupted for eight goals in their 8-1 win over host Rancho San Juan. Myah De Leon led Soledad with three goals and goalie Mariana Leon made six saves and scored a lone goal.

Adding single goals for Soledad were: Vanessa Aguilar, Fernanda Guerrero, Nichole Gonzalez and Myrin Amilpa.

In the Monterey contest, Mariana Leon made 10 saves for the Aztecs at goalie. Vanessa Aguilar scored a goal and had one assist, Maria Sanchez scored a goal, Nichole Gonzalez had a goal, Clarissa Valdez had a goal and an assist, and Michelle Aguilar was credited with an assist.

Soledad will be seeded into the Central Coast Section playoffs. Last season the Aztecs reached the CCS Division IV finals where they lost by a 4-1 score to Everett Alvarez.

The Gonzales girls finished in a tie with Robert Louis Stevenson, as both teams had 29 points each when totaling wins and ties. The Spartans had nine total wins, three losses and two ties, while the Pirates had eight wins, one loss and five ties.

Stevenson won the automatic playoff berth as they won the tiebreaker in head-to-head competition with a win and tie against Gonzales.

Gonzales finished 10-8-2 overall and 9-3-2 in the Cypress Division of the PCAL.

The Spartans claimed a 4-2 comeback win against Greenfield last week, in a game where they trailed 2-1 at halftime. Jennifer Fajardo scored two goals, and Valerie Oliva and Alessandra Tejeda-Ochoa added solo goals.

Tejeda-Ochoa, Janelle Garcia and Adilene Cortez-Lopez were credited with assists and goalie Italia Hernandez was credited with 11 saves. Grecia Valdez-Cisneros, Alitzel Mauro-Lopez, Andrea Amador and Isabella Camargo were also credited with assists.

Isabella Calderon and Aundrea Sanchez scored single goals for Greenfield, and Bruin goalie Kimberly Zavala had 15 saves.

In the win over Santa Catalina, Fajardo scored a goal and Tejeda-Ochoa had solo goals. Cortez-Lopez and Janelle Garcia had assists and goalie Italia Hernandez had eight saves.

King City girls went 1-1 in games against Santa Catalina School last week. The Mustangs won 2-1 at SCS on Feb. 15, and then lost 4-3 to the Cougars at home on Feb. 18.

In their final game, King City (4-6-3 league, 7-9-3 overall) plays Palma at home on Wednesday.
